Rahel – A Prussian Affair A film by Catharina Deus, Gabriele Conrad and Ilja Haller
Synopsis
Europe between revolution and war. Napoleon passes the Alps and conquers one country after the other. In the early 19th century everything is changing. In Prussia, where the old principles of municipal self-administration begin to falter, reforms cannot longer be detained.
In those agitated times, a young Jewish woman from Berlin fights for an unconventional life which was denied before. Rahel Levin - a misfit, an unmarried woman, not beautiful, not well-educated, but highly intelligent, sensitive and rebellious. Her salon located at the famous Gendarmenmarkt becomes one of the most popular addresses around 1800 in Berlin. There she creates a place to think, live and love differently. Self-determinded and exempt from social conventions.
